THE PROJECT
In order to create a more equal society, it is important to start at a young age. Encouraging students to tackle gender equality problems at a level where can see tangible results can make a significant difference. By increasing understanding of gender equality among participants in partner schools and their stakeholders, we can work towards a more inclusive future. To achieve this, it is crucial to routinely offer gender education in schools and ensure that educators receive professional training in cutting-edge methods for educating students about gender equality.
WHY?
European Institute for Gender Equality; According to the 2019 Gender Equality Index, the European Union has made an assessment that it acts "with the speed of a turtle" in achieving gender equality. In the index, the average score of the EU was calculated as 67.4 out of 100 and it was emphasized that the EU has a long way to go for gender equality. EU 2020- 2025 gender equality strategies put education as a precondition for raising the gender equality index. The Council of Europe has listed what is necessary for gender equality in education as follows. * Schools need support and assistance in mainstreaming gender. *The school curriculum should be reviewed and revised. *Parents, teachers, school principals, and other school staff, that is to say, everyone involved in the education of children and young people should be trained to promote and maintain the principle of gender equality in educational institutions. However, our research has shown that, although gender equality strategies are not implemented in any of the European schools, depending on certain standards, European teachers are not subject to gender equality training except for individual development efforts. During the design phase of our project, the results of the "Gender Equality Awareness Survey" applied online by the project coordinator to the teachers and students of the project partner schools, confirm the to-do list of the Council of Europe. Our targeted audience has been 927 female students, 893 male students, and 313 teachers from our partner schools who have participated in the survey. The most striking data of the survey are that 58 percent of the female students participating in the survey stated that they were subjected to peer bullying due to their gender, and the rate of those who thought that their teachers did not treat male and female students equally is 46 percent. 69 percent of the male students stated that they feel privileged. 71 percent of the students stated that their fathers were more dominant and rule-makers at home than their mothers. 97% of the teachers pointed out that they did not receive gender equality training. So we, as the partners of the project, strongly believe schools have more favorable opportunities than other cultural institutions in the construction of personality, and subjectivities, gaining knowledge of students on gender equality and raising students' awareness of gender equality. However, even when, formally, schools and the education system appear to offer equal opportunities for both genders, they cannot fully provide gender equality. Because education is related to socialization patterns as much as it is about information processes. Therefore, it is one of our project objectives to ensure that gender equality is established as a corporate culture in schools and that gender equality is the precursor of schools' strategic action plans by centering students who are young members of society in the triangle of school, family, and teacher
OBJECTIVES
Our project activities, which we have shaped in the light of the analysis revealed by the survey data and the to-do list of the Council of Europe, and aimed at achieving our project objectives;
Objective 1. To systematically provide gender equality education in schools Ob.1.a. To give teachers the professional development they need to incorporate gender equality education into the curriculum at their respective schools. Ob.1.a.1 To make it possible for teachers in schools to develop their professional knowledge, abilities, and experience in connection to gender-based education approaches built on rich learning opportunities and student-centered teaching strategies.
Ob.1.a.2. To make sure that school teachers gain professional knowledge, abilities, and insight in teaching gender equality education subjects using contemporary approaches, and also to expand the use of gender-based approaches, interdisciplinary approaches, sustainable development education approaches, and project-based approaches.
Ob.1.a.3 To provide instructional materials for Systematic Gender Equality Education. We will create three distinct intellectual products under the banner of the Sustainable Gender Equality Guide.
ADDED VALUE
The EU's Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 that goal is a Union where women and men, girls and boys, in all their diversity, are free to pursue their chosen path in life, have equal opportunities to thrive, and can equally participate in and lead our European society. The fact that the impact areas of gender equality problems are not national but international, necessitates national and international cooperation and necessary coordination for the implementation and success of gender equality. As it is understood, the gender equality problems of Europe require cooperation, responsibility, and acting together so much that a single country, a single school, or a single individual cannot solve them. While EU gender equality policies and strategies are binding for all member states, there are still differences in implementation from country to country. The source of the differences in practice lies in cultural differences and differences in education systems. Even though it is not a required course in European schools, gender equality education can be introduced as a subject or in projects and studies in a limited and scheduled course. In order to create a clean and habitable Europe, young people must actively participate in the process of learning about gender equality. They are the future builders of Europe, therefore their support and that of non-governmental groups are essential. In our project, With the assistance we will give from several European nations, we will show that gender equality awareness can be systematically strengthened in European schools. By implementing the gender equality teaching guide that we will create for our project in schools and training teachers and students on the gender equality environment, we will contribute to the application of the EU's gender equality policies and the accessibility of gender equality objectives.
