Escola Básica de Alcanede is the main school of this big group of schools called Agrupamento de Escolas D. Afonso Henriques. It is a public school with 320 students, from 5th to 9th grades, for students between 10-15 years old. Agrupamento de Escolas D. Afonso Henriques has a total of 1380 students spread over 13 kindergartens, and 12 primary schools. Alcanede school is situated in a rural area. The nearest town is Santarém, Many of our students belong to a disadvantaged socio-cultural environment because our school is situated in an area far away from the big cities and cultural life. The school has a considerable number of students from countries in Africa, Eastern Europe, Brazil, and China with specific economic and educational needs. Besides the regular classes, the pupils can expand and develop their knowledge, skills, and attitudes in additional classes and extracurricular activities. Erasmus projects give our pupils the opportunity to develop friendships with other European partners knowing different cultures and realities. It is our mission to develop lifelong learning skills and prepare our pupils for further education and the future labour market.
ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCE
Our school has great experience in different kinds of projects and activities: since 2009 we have developed European projects such as Comenius, eTwinning projects, and 3 Erasmus+: 1) “Eat Well-Move More-Do Better”; 2) ”SAVE-S)truggle Against Values Extinction”; 3) “NorthSouthEastWest-Orienteering”. We are still motivated to carry out internationalization in our school. We have also developed national projects related to the Environment (we are an Ecological School with some prizes); Healthy habits (Sports Club to improve a healthy lifestyle); European Club to develop the European dimension and values such as diversity, peace, tolerance; Sciences Club for outdoor lessons and activities; Music and Radio Clubs. Our school has a positive engagement of different members of our school community in workshops, festivities, face-to-face meetings, and school trips in collaborative work. Our teaching staff will be maintained for the following years of the project. The coordinator responsible for our school`s projects has got rich experience and expertise in European School Partnerships Projects. She has been the coordinator since 2013. With her experience and expertise as a coordinator, she will contribute to the project and maximize the outcomes and benefits for all partners. The school’s European projects team has experience in coordinating, developing, evaluating, and implementing European projects. A growing number of educators are getting involved and improving their skills in carrying out such projects. We benefit from the expertise of a project coordinator, a school psychologist, good users of ICT, and good English speakers. Also, through training courses conducted at the national and international levels, teachers from our school have acquired new teaching and evaluation skills in using active and innovative methods to teach adults and pupils with special learning difficulties. All these skills are certified by supporting documents.
